🏠 How to Help a New Believer Find a Church

A new believer needs a church family, not just a building. Look for Jesus at the centre, the Bible taught, real community and a next step, go with them the first time, tell them what to expect, and keep walking with them.

Key takeaways

  • The first Christians devoted themselves to teaching, fellowship, breaking bread and prayer (Acts 2:42); new believers need a church family too.
  • Look for Jesus at the centre, the Bible taught, people who know each other's names, a welcome for newcomers and a church close enough to keep attending.
  • Go with them, tell them what to expect, connect them beyond Sunday, and keep walking with them if the first visit goes badly.

“Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.”

1 Corinthians 12:27

When someone starts following Jesus, one of the most important things you can do is help them find a church. Not just a building or a website, but a community of believers where they can worship, learn, belong and grow.

The first Christians did not follow Jesus alone. They were baptized and then:

They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. (Acts 2:42)

Here is how to help a new believer find that kind of church family.

Why a new believer needs a church

Following Jesus alone is like trying to grow up without a family. A church gives a new believer:

Paul described the church as a body:

Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. (1 Corinthians 12:27)

A body part does not thrive on its own. Neither does a believer.

What to look for

Churches differ in style, size and tradition. That is fine. Help them look for the things that matter most:

Start with your own church, if it fits

If you belong to a healthy church nearby, invite them to come with you. A familiar face makes the first visit much easier. How to invite someone to church has the words, and the text to send includes a Sunday invite.

If your church is far from where they live, or is not a good fit for them, help them find one near home instead. Their growth matters more than which church they attend.

Go with them

The first visit is the hardest. Offer to:

Tell them what to expect

New believers often have never been to church, or have not been in years. Small unknowns can stop them: how long it is, what to wear, what happens with kids, whether they have to sing or give money. Answer those questions ahead of time. A simple "people wear anything, it's about an hour and a half, and no one expects you to give" removes a lot of anxiety.

Connect them beyond Sunday

Sunday is a start, but most growth happens in smaller settings. Help them join a small group, a class for new believers, or a regular meal with a few people. Introduce them to a pastor, especially if they want to be baptized. How to explain baptism to a new believer can help with that conversation.

If the first visit goes badly

Sometimes it does. Nobody talked to them, a sermon confused them, or something felt strange. Do not get defensive. Listen, apologise if needed, and offer to try again, or to visit a different church together. One bad Sunday should not end the search.

Keep walking with them

Finding a church does not replace your friendship. Keep meeting, reading the Bible together and praying. The first seven days with a new believer and how to disciple someone show what that looks like.

Kingdom Base has a free Sunday Bench for exactly this: note who you invited, remind them on Saturday, and remember to meet them at the door. Start free.

Questions

How do I help a new believer find a church?

Invite them to your church if it is healthy and nearby, or help them find one close to home. Look for Jesus at the centre, Bible teaching, real community, a welcome for newcomers and a next step such as a small group. Go with them the first time.

What should a new Christian look for in a church?

A church where Jesus is central, the Bible is taught, people know each other's names, newcomers are welcomed, there is a way to connect beyond Sunday, and it is close enough to attend regularly.

What if their first visit to church goes badly?

Listen without getting defensive, apologise if needed, and offer to try again or visit a different church together. One bad Sunday should not end the search.
