Follow-Up

💬 The Text to Send Before You Rewrite It

The follow-up dies while you edit the message. Use their name, one real detail, and one question — the same day, within 48 hours, and before Sunday.

Key takeaways

  • Use their name, one real detail and one question.
  • Send it the same day, again within 48 hours, and before Sunday with a specific church invite.
  • Write in the language you actually spoke together, and do not over-edit.

“so we cared for you. Because we loved you so much, we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God but our lives as well.”

1 Thessalonians 2:8

The follow-up usually dies in the notes app. You met someone. You said you would text. Then you stand in a parking lot rewriting one sentence into a paragraph, decide it sounds strange, and put the phone away.

Send the short one.

The free card is The Text to Send. It has three messages in English and Spanish: the same day, within 48 hours, and the Sunday invite. Put their first name in. Add one real detail if you have it. Copy it before you improve it.

Same day, only what you promised

If you said you would send a link, a prayer, or a note, send that before you drive home. The message is not a second sermon. It is proof you meant the sentence you already said.

Use their name. Mention the real moment if you have one — their knee, their son, the question they asked. Then stop.

Hey, it was good to meet you. Sending this like I said I would.

A longer version that sounds like a campaign tells them a system got their number. A short version that sounds like you tells them a person did.

Within 48 hours, one question

The next text asks how they are. One question. Then you wait.

If you remember a detail, name it. If you do not, do not invent one. "I was thinking about you. How are you doing?" is a complete message.

The 48-hour field guide is the rhythm around the words. The words themselves should stay shorter than the guide. What to do when they reply — and what not to stack into the first bubble — is in what to text after evangelism.

Before Sunday, name the door

"You should come to church sometime" is easy to ignore. Name the church, the time, and where you will be standing.

You are offering to walk in together. That is different from handing them a service time and hoping they are brave alone.

If they did not give you a number

Do not text them.

A warm conversation is not permission. If they did not offer a number or ask you to follow up, pray for them and leave the thread unstarted. Consent is the line between care and chasing a stranger. The same line is in what not to write down: if they did not agree to follow-up, do not store a way to reach them.

Send it in the language you actually spoke

If the conversation was in Spanish, the text should be in Spanish. The card has both. Matching their language is care. A translated blast they did not ask for is not.

What you will want to add

You will want a verse, a second question, an apology for texting, and a paragraph about your church. Leave them out of the first message. If they reply, you have a conversation. If they do not, three extra sentences would not have created one.

Write their name. Mention the real moment. Ask one thing, or name one plan. Send it.

Then put the phone down.

Questions

What should I text after I share the gospel?

Use their name, mention the real conversation, and ask one question. If you promised a link, send it the same day. Check in again within 48 hours. Do not stack three messages in one text.

How soon should I text someone I just met?

The same day if you promised something. Within 48 hours for a personal check-in, while they still remember you. After that, a late text is still better than silence, and it should stay short.

What if they did not give me their number?

Do not text them. You can pray without a thread. A warm conversation is not permission to start one.

What should a Sunday church invite say?

Name the church, the time, and where you will meet them. Offer to walk in together. An invitation without a door and a person is easy to ignore.
