⛪ The Follow-Up System Every Church Needs (and Almost None Have)

Ask most churches how many people gave their life to Jesus last year and you'll get a number. Ask how many of those are still walking with Him and the room goes quiet.

That's not a failure of love. It's a failure of system. Love without a system leaks.

Why the leak happens

It's almost never apathy. It's these four things:

• The card goes in a drawer. Someone collects response cards and there's no defined next action.
• Nobody owns it. Everybody assumed the small groups pastor had it.
• The window closes. Research and experience agree: contact within 48 hours changes retention dramatically. A call three weeks later feels like an audit.
• One conversation counts as done. A single welcome call is not discipleship.

A decision is a birth. Nobody hands a newborn a pamphlet and wishes them luck.

A system that actually works

You don't need software to start. You need clarity on five things.

1. One named owner. Not a team, not a committee — a person whose job it is that nobody gets lost. Volunteers can do the work; one person owns the outcome.

2. Capture in the moment. Name, phone, and one line about their story, taken while you're standing with them. Not a form to fill in later. Later never comes.

3. A defined 48-hour action. A text or call from a real human being. Not the pastor necessarily — ideally whoever prayed with them. Script it loosely: *how are you actually doing, what's confusing, can I pray for something.*

4. A 30-day rhythm. Four touches in the first month beats twelve in the first year. Week one: check in. Week two: invite to something small and relational. Week three: get them a Bible and a starting point (John, not Leviticus). Week four: connect them to a group and a person, not just a service.

5. A visible list. If you can't see who's due, you will forget. This is the whole ballgame.
