Born again is Jesus' phrase from John 3:3 for the new life God gives a person who trusts him. Here is where it comes from, what it means, how it happens, what changes and how to explain it plainly.

“Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.”
John 3:3
"Born again" is one of the most used, and most misunderstood, phrases in Christianity. Some hear it as a label for a certain kind of Christian. Some hear jargon. But the phrase comes from Jesus himself, and what it describes is simple and wonderful: God gives a person a brand-new life.
A respected religious teacher named Nicodemus came to Jesus at night with questions. Jesus told him:
Jesus replied, "Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again." (John 3:3)
Nicodemus was confused. Could a grown man go back into his mother's womb? Jesus explained that he was not talking about physical birth but about a spiritual one, a new life that comes from God's Spirit (John 3:5-8).
Being born again means God does something in a person that they could never do for themselves. It is not turning over a new leaf, trying harder, or becoming religious. It is a new start that God gives.
Peter described it like this:
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, (1 Peter 1:3)
Notice who does the work: God, "in his great mercy". And notice what makes it possible: the resurrection of Jesus.
Paul put the result this way:
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! (2 Corinthians 5:17)
In the same conversation with Nicodemus, Jesus said the words that became the most famous verse in the Bible:
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16)
New birth comes through trusting Jesus. John wrote earlier in his Gospel:
Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— (John 1:12)
Receiving him, believing in him: that is the human side. Giving new life: that is God's side. There are no magic words. A person turns from going their own way and trusts Jesus, and God makes them new. How to lead someone to Christ walks through that moment.
What changes: a person is forgiven, adopted into God's family, given the Holy Spirit, and begins a new life of following Jesus. Many describe a new peace, new desires, and a new love for God and people.
What does not change overnight: old habits, hard circumstances, personality. A newborn is fully alive but still has a lot of growing to do. That is why discipleship matters: walking with someone as they learn to follow Jesus. What is discipleship? explains it.
Struggling does not mean it did not take. Just said yes to Jesus: what now? is written for exactly those first days.
"Born again" can sound like church jargon to people who did not grow up with it. Try saying it in plain words:
God gave me a new life. Not a better version of the old one, a new start, because of what Jesus did.
That is also why the testimony builder flags "born again" as a church word and suggests a plain alternative. The idea is not wrong. It just needs to be understood.
Is "born again" a type of Christian? No. Jesus said no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again. It describes every true follower of Jesus, not a group within the church.
Do I need to remember the exact moment? Not necessarily. Some people remember a clear day. Others came to faith gradually. What matters is whether you are trusting Jesus now.
Can I lose it? Christians discuss this question differently. What Scripture makes clear is that new life rests on God's mercy and Jesus' resurrection (1 Peter 1:3), not on how strong you feel on a given day. If you are unsure, talk with a pastor or a mature Christian you trust.
If you are walking with someone who was just born again, keep track of how they are doing and the next step. Kingdom Base is a free app built for that.
To be born again means receiving new spiritual life from God through trusting Jesus. Jesus used the phrase in John 3:3, and 1 Peter 1:3 says God gives new birth through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is a new start God gives, not a self-improvement project.
By turning from going your own way and trusting Jesus. John 1:12 says that to all who received him and believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God. There are no magic words.
No. Jesus said no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again, so the phrase describes every true follower of Jesus, not a group within the church.
